Polarized sunglasses are specially designed to reduce the reflections/ glare from sunlight and to protect the eyes from their harmful effect. They are also used to protect eyes from the harsh light coming from computer screens. To ensure the full benefits of using polarized sunglasses, it is very important to verify their authenticity before buying. There are three simple yet effective ways to test if your sunglasses are genuinely polarized or not. Polarized glasses usually come with ‘test tags’ or lens stickers that can be used to verify their authenticity. To perform the test, you need to first look at the tag or sticker through the lenses and then slowly rotate the lenses 90 degrees. The tag should look perceptibly darker, if the glasses are polarized properly. In case the test tags are missing in the glasses you have chosen, you can perform another test. Get a second pair of sunglasses. Place the two sunglasses together and look at some object placed in sunlight. Rotate one of the sunglasses 90 degrees. If the object looks darker, it means both the sunglasses are polarized, because the light has been blocked effectively. There is one more test that can be done – select some flat surface that reflects light easily like, a windshield. Look at it through your sunglasses. The reflected light should become significantly reduced. Rotate the glasses 90 degrees – the light should increase as the filter allows more light to pass through. Test your sunglasses before buying them and save your eyes from trouble.
